Hannah Call

My art is my conversation with the world around me, my attempt at capturing an instant that felt too sharp and poignant to part with so soon. I live on a ranch in Paradise Valley, surrounded by horses, cattle, and all the wondrous wildlife Montana has to offer. I'm continuously inspired by the honesty and grit of the people and animals around me. My work seeks to honor the sparks that create meaning here in the modern West.

There are plenty of people telling the grand stories, the classic expansionist tale of the pioneer going west, the traditional cowboy riding home at dusk beneath cumulus clouds… my work explores the minutia, the curiosity, the relatable moments of magic and frustration that anyone working and living this modern western lifestyle can relate to.

My style has evolved from traditional realism into a story of omission. My pencil marks inform the greater narrative of a piece as much as the oil paint to create a more nuanced interplay between line and form. This technique gives me an unexpected avenue to guide the viewer's eye through the image. It also nods to the greater western narrative — this idealized world of cowboys and horses is both evolving into something new and disappearing all at once, and we are all participants in the outcome.
